An inside look at labour activism in South Korea.

Documentary : Dolls and Dust
5.00pm

(South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, 1998)
Produced during the currency and economic crisis of 1998, this award winning video (4th Internationale VideOlympiade in South Africa 1998) presents first account testimonies from women workers in Sri Lanka, Thailand and South Korea on the impact of industrial restructuring, globalisation, and '(m)ale development' on their lives, communities and the environment.

Feature: Manufacturing Consent
The Political Economy of the Mass Media
7.00pm

(USA,1992) English
As relevant today as when it first came out, Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, depict how contrary to the usual image of the press as objective in its search for truth, an underlying elite consensus largely structures all facets of the news, in which the marketplace and the economics of publishing significantly shape the news. It contrasts the double standards underlying accounts of free elections, free press, and governmental repression between Nicaragua and El Salvador; between the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and the American invasion of Vietnam; between the genocide in Cambodia under a pro-American government and genocide under Pol Pot. What emerges from this pathbreaking work is an account of just how propagandistic the mass media is, and how their ideological agenda dictates how issues are framed and topics chosen.
