Peasant Movements in Ecuador Blockading Roads
by IMC 13 Apr 2000

Peasant mobalization in Ecuador increasing.

Peasant movements in Ecuador who seized the country in an insurrect move in January have once again blocked the roads throughout the country. The blockades were up already by Tuesday (Apr 11) in all but 3 of the 22 provinces in Ecuador, cutting off access to both the coast and the jungle regions.

The roadblocks came in response to the government's efforts to privatize the healthcare system. The insurrect peasants are demanding the president have a working meeting with them to resolve the crisis over privatization of healthcare. Currently many of the country's healthcare facilities are closed because of lack of government support in supplies and personnel, in spite of the intake of 600 million dollars in contributions each year!

Support for the shutdown is said to be growing daily.
