brazil: the anti-celebrations of 500 years

April 22, the government, the rich white people he represents, in one word:
the status quo, wanted to celebrate the 500 years of the 'discovery' of
brazil. It is obviously a fascist celebration because is based in the date
the white europeans brought a culture of domination to theses lands. The
black people arrived here later (brought as slaves) and the indians lived
here before the europeans arrived. So 'discovery' clearly means just the
begining of the conquest of the europeans values. Globo Network, the major
entertainmente corporation of brazil, have been also the major celebrator of
this date. Since some years ago Globo have made a lot of events and have
built big clocks in all states capitols of brazil to celebrate the 500
years.
But they got during the last week, finishing in april 22, a big mobilization
of indians, students, landless and others to demonstrate against all the
fascist and capitalist ideals behind the celebration.
Never before we had in brazil a bigest indian mobilization, all over the
country.
Last week, indians that were going to Porto Seguro (the city where the
portugueses arrived in 1500 and the place of the oficial national
celebrations in april 22) crossed the brazil capital, Brasilia. There they
threw their arrows in the Globo's clock until they have managed to stop the
clock . In the same day one of the indians managed to enter the national
congress and pass through security and with a arrow in his hand pointing to
one of most powefuls men of brazil (senator ACM, who is 'imperor' of Bahia's
state) reclaim their rights as indians peoples. Those pictures appeared in
all newspapers and tv networks and were like those that are remembered many
years after the fact happened.
The president Fernando Henrique Cardoso got afraid of going to Porto Seguro
in april 22 becuse of the indian, landless and people in general
mobilization to go there to thye demonstrations. A week before april 22 the
president still didn't know if they would go to Porto Seguro, afraid with
his security. A fascist that runs a tv news claim the landless were
anti-democratic because the president (democraticaly elected) were not able
to go anywhere he wanted in th country. But what we saw was the opposite.
The state declared war to people: to indians, to landless, to blacks and to
anyone that wanted go to Porto Seguro to the demonstrations. Thousands of
cops and soldiers stopped the landlesses, indians, blacks, etc, in the roads
to Porto Seguro. The thousands of protesters were stopped on the roads. The
police search guns and other things considered dangerouses in every car and
every person that wanted enter the city in the last weeks.
A lot of landlesses were stopped far from Porto Seguro. But we had a big
confrontation on the road between indians (mainly), landelesses, blacks,
students, workers and anarcho-punks against the army and police. 150 people
were arrested. The media talked more about the violence an protests than the
celebration. I think it was a victory because people forced the government
and elites to show the real face of this so called democracy. They had to
put a dictatorship upon people to celebrate their 500 years of domination.
MST (landlesses movement) said they would intensify the land occupations to
'celebrate' the 500 years.
In many cities the Globo clocks (the main symbol of this celebration) were
smashed during the last week. 400 students and workers smashed and fucked up
the clock in Fortaleza, april 18, fighting with the police. In Recife, april
22, landelesses and homelesses threw molotov cocktails on the clock.
(someone told me that indians smashed the clock in Rio de Janeiro but i
could not find this news in the press). In Porto Alegre (a city runned by a
letf party in a state runned by the same party) the clock was totally burnt
(see attachement) also in april 22.
Here in Florianopolis, april 22, around 300 people (most students) threw
some paint on the clock and made a demonstration and some other direct
action in downtown reclaiming a park closed by the fascist mayor we have. We
faced the batons and the rubber bullets of the police. 8 were arrested (4
when were returning to home) and others were hurt. One of them was targeted
by a rubber bullet in the face and will be submitted to a surgery tomorrow.
Now the police are seeing videos to 'catch the witches'.
Probably others Globo clocks in the others twenty and something cities they
were built have been smashed.

in  26 years is the first time i can remember the government got really
afraid of the people in this country.
