This project is co-chaired by Harry J. Pearce, Vice Chairman of General Motors, Phil Watts, Managing Director of Shell International, and Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda, Honorary Chairman of Toyota. The 'Sustainable Mobility' project will sponsor an independent evaluation of the sustainability of the world's current means of mobility. It will follow this report with stakeholder meetings in developed and developing countries that will focus on mobility issues involving land transportation. The main report, building on the preceding two, will offer visions of sustainable transportation systems of the future, outlining supportive policy options and practical tools for achieving the visions. A key issue will be whether incremental steps in technology by itself can achieve sustainable mobility, or if dramatic changes in public policies and user behaviour are needed. The report will be released in late 2002, the year of Earth Summit 3. The sustainable mobility project is one of four member-led projects now underway within the WBCSD. It will involve other WBCSD member companies, including Ford Motor Company, as well as outside organizations and individuals. An independent assurance group will advise the project and assess the results. Björn Stigson, President of the WBCSD, welcomed the new project: "I am very pleased that the WBCSD can serve as a credible platform for the sustainable mobility initiative. We need to build an understanding of how we can shift mobility needs and values as well as transportation modes onto a sustainable path. Such a project could help bring about the necessary change in industry as well as in public policy." Notes The WBCSD is a coalition of 130 companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development. Its members are drawn from 30 countries and more than 20 major industrial sectors. The organisation also benefits from a thriving global network of national and regional business councils and partner organisations, representing more than 600 business leaders. Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda is a Vice Chairman of the WBCSD Executive Committee and Phil Watts a member of the WBCSD Executive Committee. 3M Company ABB Asea Brown Boveri ABN AMRO Bank Aguas de Barcelona (AGBAR), Alcoa, Allianz Anglo America plc Anova Holding Aracruz Celulose Arthur D.
