URGENT CALL TO ACTION re. Police Arrests and Beatings

At around 3pm today, Medha Patkar and 250 other NBA activists were forcibly removed from near the Shram Shakti Bhavan where they have been on an indefinite dharna since ten days ago. In a totally unprovoked action, Delhi Police chose to act heavy handedly.

In a shocking display of unlawful brutality, several protestors were violently manhandled, one activist being badly beaten by an policeman out of uniform.

All the arrested were taken to Parliament Street Police Station, and are yet to be released.

This may be a response to the pressure put on the PM yesterday. After the meeting between the NBA and the PM, he announced that he would review the decision to raise the dam height and respond within two days.

It is crucial that he is held to his word.

We ask you to URGENTLY fax or call the PM demanding that the people of the Narmada Valley are given justice - that CONSTRUCTION MUST BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY UNTIL REHABILITATION IS COMPLETED AS PER SUPREME COURT DIRECTIONS.
