Anti-wto action in NYC

New York

About 2-3000 people held a festive march in New York City on the afternoon of September 13, in solidarity with the protests against the WTO being held in Cancun. The weather was not good; the forecast was for pouring rain all afternoon, and even though in fact it never a actually rained (only a light drizzle) the crowd would doubtless have been significantly bigger had the weather cooperated. The energy was great; lots of balloons, colorful signs, puppets. There was a bike bloc, and a very energetic drum bloc.

The march, sponsored in part by United For Peace and Justice (the national anti-war organization here in the US) was organized around a 'tour' of corporate offenders such as Exxon-Mobil, Taco-Bell (a fast-food mexican food chain with a record of abusing agricultural workers), GAP, etc. After gathering at Union Square, we marched around lower Manhattan for about two hours, then finished up at Washington Square Park for a closing rally with music, speeches, and theater.
