"People's International Conference in Seoul" : "Neo-liberalism, IMF, and Peoples' Solidarity"

July 10 - 12, 1998

In recent days, Korean people's movements including KCTU(Korean confederation of trade union) are fighting powerfully against new government & IMF SAPs.(structural adjustment programmes) We argue the abolition of lay-off bill & workers' dispatch system. We also demand DJ government to renegotiate with IMF and to stop the privatization of public sectors.

The "Korean Action Network for Int'l Solidarity against global domination of capital" is composed of six progressive groups. We have launched a campaign against IMF, MAI, even though Korean people have little consciousness of MAI.

In actuality, we held a demonstration against MAI, IMF in front of the Korean government complex office on April 29(during anti-MAI PGA campaign).

In this context, Korean people's movements will hold international conference on July 10-12, in Seoul. The conveners' committee of "People's International Conference in Seoul" is composed of many progressive organizations, trade unions, grassroots movements such as KCTU, Solidarity for democracy & progress, Policy and Information Center for Int'l Solidarity etc.

Sandwiched between the Third World nation and advanced industrial nations, Korea has become a symbolic site for neoliberalism, because it is simultaneously faced with the onslaught of MAI in addition to the IMF. Therefore we think that Korean people's struggle against IMF, MAI is sure to influence the tide of people's movements throught the world.

We are going to launch a powerful struggle against both MAI and the IMF's structural adjustment program. We intend to lay the foundation for an international solidarity struggle against MAI, IMF through "People's International Conference in Seoul" both on the national and international level.

Especially we would like to have a chance to listen to PGA members' experience and struggle against neoliberalism.

We need your interest and solidarity.
