Make Poverty History march to be held in Edinburgh
02 May 2005 12:36

The Make Poverty History campaign has announced details of a massive march it is planning to hold in Edinburgh this summer. Around 100,000 people are expected to join the protest four days before the G8 summit at Gleneagles.

Make Poverty History has already made its mark through the support of celebrities and television.

Famous faces will be there on 2 July when the campaign holds its rally in Edinburgh.

The organisers are hoping 100,000 people will gather at the Meadows and then march through the city centre, calling for action from the G8 leaders.

Norman Chipakupaku, a Fair Trade campaigner, said: "100,000 people will come here to Edinburgh and say to the G8 leaders: Listen, it's time to listen. Because if they don't listen, poverty will continue in Africa and the rest of the world."

There has been concern that the march could be disrupted by violent protesters - but the campaign says it is confident there won't be trouble.

Judith Robertson from Make Poverty History said: "They're people from all walks of life, from the Mother's Union, the Girls' Brigade, the Boys' Brigade, from Oxfam, Christian Aid, from the churches, the trade union movement. Over 400 organisations in Britain have joined up to this movement."

The organisers are hoping to make a statement which will be visible from the sky. Everyone who is coming is being asked to wear white so that from above the march will replicate the Make Poverty History wristband.
